About

Daphne Art Foundation, with the support from the Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts Department, invites the community to visit the Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery, located inside the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Laredo College Fort McIntosh campus, for the exhibition On the edge, Al Borde.  Admission is free, open to all the community.

Founded in 2019, Daphne Art Foundation is a nonprofit arts organization that focuses on improving the quality of life through transformative cultural experiences. Our mission is to advance the visual, performing, and media arts in our border region. We do this by providing residencies to artists and creatives, exhibiting and promoting artists, and cultivating arts appreciation and participation.

On the Edge, Al Borde is a multimediaa art exhibition curated by Daphne Art Foundation's Executive Director Maritza Bautista.  The exhibit showcases the artwork of eight up-and-coming young Laredo artists that explore edgy themes with their work.  Over 30 works of a variety of media including painting, silkscreen, video, photography, digital art, and mixed media will be on view.

The artists are Alexander Barron, Alejandro Cortinas, Genesis Victoria Hernandez, Kassandra Romero, Homero Salazar, Raul Seca, Jr., Gabriela Treviño, and Martha Viera. They are all native to Laredo and have exhibited their works at various venues locally, creating a buzz about how they use materials, found objects, and their personal lives to speak on topics about animal rights, women’s autonomy, and chronic health conditions, among others.

On the Edge, Al Borde will be on view from June 8 to August 4.

Curator Statement

There is currently a surge of young artists shaping the culture of Laredo with photography, video,  guerilla style public art installations, and plein-air artmaking. They are reimagining and creating spaces of art through pop up art shows almost every week. They are captivating audiences with their murals and Street Art in the downtown area, and beyond. It is time to celebrate this, them.

On the Edge, Al Borde features Alexander Barron, Alejandro Cortinas, Genesis Victoria Hernandez, Kassandra Romero, Homero Salazar, Raul Seca, Jr., Gabriela Treviño, and Martha Viera — all of whom are artists to follow and see where their art will take them, and vice-versa.

Each of the artists explores and represents edgy topics. They are not afraid of taking risks with their use of concepts, materials, and found objects. Their approach to experimentation is boundless. It reflects their own life experiences to create an artwork that reveals bold, internalized sensations about everyday life struggles; nostalgic tendencies, the dark side of humanity, wellness, and proficiency.

There is so much to witness and absorb in this exhibition. I hope you will join us in supporting these young artists' efforts.
